What to expect

This tour will show you the most amazing places around Baku.

The Gobustan national park will amaze you with ancient monuments and cravings in rock, mud volcanoes and an area full of small mountains which are like dancing mud fountains. There you will also find Ateshgah (an old Persian word which means fire temple), where the Zoroastrians used to worship the fire, and Yanardag, a burning mountain which has eternal fire on it. It does not matter at what time you visit, it is always burning.

You will start your tour visiting Gobustan national park. The park is an archaeological reserve, south of Baku, in a plain located between the south-eastern slope of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range and the Caspian Sea, part of which is a cultural landscape of rock carvings, located in an area of 537 hectares. The monuments are divided into two groups: 1) petroglyphs and 2) ancient sites and other facilities.

After the park, you will explore the mud volcanoes located close to Gobustan museum. After that you will continue on your way to the Fire Temple – Ateshgah. The temple of fire worshippers is located at the Apsheron peninsula at the outskirts of the village Surakhani. There fire has been revered in different times by Zoroastrians, Hindus and Sikhs. The current constructions of the temple dated back to the XVII century. As a result of recent excavations far more ancient artifacts were discovered here.

The excursion ends at Yanar Dag. Yanar dag is a natural gas fire which blazes continuously on a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula on the Caspian Sea.
