The presence of Jewish communities in Marseille dates back to the Roman Empire, but it became stronger during the Inquisition when Jewish populations from Spain, Portugal and France sought papal protection in Provence. During World War II, many Jews arrived in Marseille in the hope of setting sail for America, and also after the decolonization of Algeria and Tunisia, Jewish populations arrived en masse in France and particularly in Marseille.
