Prepare to visit Florence

When’s the best time to visit Florence?

Florence is a great place to visit all year round. But spring and autumn are the best periods enjoy the city at its best. The weather is sunny without being too hot, attractions are busy without being too crowded, and there’s a plethora of events going on. Summer is also a pleasant, but temperatures in the city go up as well as the number of visitors and accommodation prices. Family-owned restaurants, especially those outside the centre, shut for their holidays. That’s why we suggest heading over in the winter months, when there are fewer tourists around, the city is festively lit, and lovely Christmas markets fill up its squares.

How many days should you spend in Florence?

Florence is a human-scale city that is easy to get around on foot. If you only want to visit the main attractions and you’re able to book tickets in advance, then a weekend is sufficient. But consider it takes about half a day to visit the Uffizi Gallery and the Boboli Gardens. That’s why we would recommend at least 3-4 days to visit so you can experience the city to the fullest. This way you’ll have time to enjoy Tuscan cuisine and wander among the piazzas and historic stores. If you have any more time on your hands, then we recommend taking some day trips around Tuscany and its towns, such as Siena, Lucca and San Gimignano.

Where are the best places to stay in Florence?

The historic centre of Florence is quite intimate and is also an ideal area to stay if you want to visit all the main attractions of the city. Piazza della Signoria and Ponte Vecchio are both popular areas. Bear in mind, however, that the centre is a traffic-restricted zone, so if you are travelling by car, it may be a bit of a hassle. Visitors arriving by train will find the Santa Maria Novella area. This neighbourhood is close to the main station and it’s safe and quiet. If you’re a fan of the nightlife, then the historic Santo Spirito neighbourhood in the Oltrarno is ideal for your stay. Last but not least, if you’re looking for a more rustic experience in the very middle of nature, then there are excellent agritourism houses and accommodations around the picturesque Florentine hills.
