About the Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty has been a global icon since the day it first adorned the New York skyline. Ever since, it’s been a symbol of freedom, hope, opportunity, and a new life. Nowadays, most visitors arrive in New York by plane, so they miss out on the frisson of excitement felt by immigrants arriving by boat. But that spine-tingling emotion can be felt by visiting the statue on a boat trip from Manhattan.

Standing almost more than 300 feet above sea level since 1886, the copper colossus is a sight to behold. A museum on Liberty Island tells the history of the statue through hundreds of images and items, from its design in France to its completion in New York. Inside the statue, you can climb the 354 steps to the crown for a panoramic view of Manhattan.

The story of how it was a gift from France is as famous as the statue itself. Less well-known are the travails of getting it up – it took more than a decade to complete the transatlantic project. Even after 200,000 New Yorkers welcomed the ship carrying the pieces to be assembled, a massive fundraising drive was needed to pay for its erection.

Things to know before your visit

  • Liberty Island and the museum and its shop are accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, however, the crown is only accessible by stairs

  • All visitors must undergo airport-style security screening

  • Large bags are not permitted on Liberty Island

  • Taking pictures is allowed

  • There’s a café serving food and drink on Liberty Island

  • Tickets should be purchased in advance due to high demand

  • No entrance pass is required on five holidays – January 16, April 22, August 4, September 23 and November 11

Opening hours

The Statue of Liberty is open from 09:00 to 18:45 every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, when it’s closed

How to get there

What should I really see at the Statue of Liberty?

If you can handle the 354 steps to the crown, then make sure to go all the way to the top. There are 25 windows from which you can look out over New York harbor, Governors Island, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. Stays in the crown are limited to 10 minutes. Another must is the museum, which has an exhibition chronicling the history of the statue from its design by Frédéric Bartholdi and engineering by Gustave Eiffel in France to its assembly and erection in New York in the 1880s. There are hundreds of photographs from the period. The museum’s star attraction is the statue’s original torch, which was replaced in 1984.

What are the best ways to visit the Statue of Liberty?

With millions of visitors every year, the Statue of Liberty isn’t the sort of place you saunter up to without a ticket. It’s one of New York’s most in-demand attractions, so pre-purchase is absolutely essential. We recommend a guided tour with fast-track admission. What’s more, many tours also include a visit to Ellis Island, where more than 12 million immigrants were processed. You can also simply take it in from the deck of a boat that sails around the island.

How much time do I need for visiting the Statue of Liberty?

Liberty Island is tiny, so it’s quick and easy to explore. If you want to go to the crown, then a visit will take longer as you need to climb a spiral staircase to the top – the equivalent of about 14 stories – and then you have a maximum of 10 minutes inside the crown viewing platform. Overall, plan for about 2 hours on Liberty Island.

What is the best time to visit the Statue of Liberty?

To avoid the crowds, arrive as early as possible in the morning. The busiest times are generally between 12:00 and 15:00. Wednesday tends to be the day with the fewest visitors, while Saturday and Sunday are the days of the week with the highest footfall.

Is the poem The New Colossus about the Statue of Liberty?

The New Colossus speaks of the Statue of Liberty as the beacon of hope that greets immigrants who passed it on their way to a new life in the New World. One of the fundraisers for the statue’s pedestal asked poet Emma Lazarus to write a poem to help in the construction. After initially refusing, she penned the 14 lines that have become immortal and are stamped on a bronze plaque inside the statue. In particular, the words ‘Give me your tired, your poor/ Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free’, have come to be seen as the embodiment of American’s openness. As such, many experts believe that Lazarus’s poem changed the symbolism of the statue from ‘liberty’ to ‘welcome to America’.
