Do this because

  • Explore the village of Puerto Pirámides
  • Visit the old naval station of Punta Delgada

What to expect

The tour departs from the city of Puerto Madryn to the North, following provincial route Nº2 until arriving at the Control Post where the entrance fee is paid (approximately 40 km from Madryn). From here you will begin to discover the enchantments of the Peninsula, its landscape, its flora, and fauna. At this point, you are on the Carlos Ameghino Isthmus, a narrow land strip of land that connects the Peninsula with the continent. The first stop is at the Carlos Ameghino Interpretation Center, where you receive information about the ecosystem of the Peninsula and other important aspects regarding the Patagonia land animals, the species of marine fauna, the flora, and history of the region. You will also observe the complete skeleton of a whale.

Then, you will go to Puerto Pirámides, the only village on the Peninsula, and the only place for starting the marine fauna boat trips. The boat trips are made in boats of varying capacities, from 5 to 70 passengers, and last approximately one and a half hours. From June to December Southern right whales are in the gulf and the tours are during this time. You will be able to get very close to them! From time to time they swim under the boat and we are able to observe their actions and hear their breathing.

You leave Puerto Pyramids continuing with the excursion on the Provincial route Nº2. On the way, you pass by the Great Salt Lake and Small Salt Lake, the most important depressions of South America. Heading to the Southeastern end of the Peninsula you will arrive at Punta Delgada which is an old naval station. The Lighthouse dates from the year 1905. One of the greatest concentrations of elephant seals in an area can be observed with the great cliffs standing behind. After a few kilometers, you arrive at Calleta Valdes, an exceptional geologic formation. The calleta also has a Magellan Penguin colony of several hundred individuals. Between the months of October and March, depending on the condition of the roads and the migrations of the fauna, you will visit Punta Norte, a breeding elephant seals, and sea lions. With the high tide, it is possible to see Orcas. After this, you return to Puerto Madryn.
