  • Contemplate war and peace at the ruins of St Nicholas Church
  • Investigate the authentic nuclear shelter in the “underworld Hamburg”
  • Learn about the rise and fall of Nazi Hamburg, the Neuengamme concentration camps and the “Operation Gomorrah”

What to expect

The 2-hours guided tour will begin at the Port of Hamburg, where you will see the legendary U-434 submarine. This fully operational Soviet warship serves now as a museum dedicated to the horrors of the war. Your expert guide will explain the significant role that the harbor played in WWI as well as WWII.

The next stop of this tour will be the Bismarck Monument, which is a grand 35-metre-high tribute to Otto von Bismarck, the Prussian statesman who engineered the unification of the German Empire. Next, you will pass by the majestic St Michael’s Church and head towards the ruins of St Nicholas Church. In the 19th century, St Nicholas was for a short time the world’s tallest building before getting heavily damaged in the bombing of Hamburg in 1943. Proceeding to the humbling ruins of a grand cathedral, you will spot the Memorial Prayer for Peace, a small memorial dedicated to the hope for peace. Then, join the 4-hour tour to visit the Bunker Hamburg Central Station (Hamburger Unterwelten e.V. ). It is an underground nuclear shelter that serves as a museum and a monument to the Cold War era. Inside the bunker, you will feel as if you stepped back in time as everything is left untouched.

Your private guide will give you an educational tour of the rooms and the technology used. In such a confined space, you will be able to imagine the horror and fear the people of Hamburg had to go through during the bombings that destroyed 75% of the city.
