What to expect
Sarakina Gorge is a natural wonder located near the village of Mythi, on the island of Crete, Greece. It is a narrow, steep-sided canyon, carved by a small stream that flows through it. The gorge is approximately 1.5 kilometers long and varies in width from 3 to 10 meters.
The gorge is surrounded by impressive limestone walls that tower up to 150 meters high, creating a dramatic and imposing landscape. The limestone cliffs are adorned with small waterfalls and lush vegetation, adding to the beauty of the gorge.
The walk through the Sarakina Gorge is an unforgettable experience, with breathtaking views at every turn. The path follows the stream that flows through the gorge, and visitors have to wade through the shallow water at certain points. The walk is relatively easy, with no significant elevation changes, but it can be slippery and rocky in some areas, so proper footwear is recommended.
The sound of the stream and the songs of the birds create a peaceful and serene atmosphere, making the Sarakina Gorge an ideal place for a relaxing stroll and a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Along the way, visitors will come across several small caves and niches, which were used in the past as shelters by the locals. These caves also served as hideouts for the resistance during World War II.
