What to expect
This full day 4x4 tour takes you through the countryside to explore hidden corners of the Algarve. And best of all, it's exclusively for you and your party alone. You'll go off-road to visit an ancient castle, swim in a natural spring, and drop in at a hillside hamlet to taste honey and medronho – the fiery local spirit.
It all starts at Barranco do Velho – a hillside hamlet on the slopes of Caldeirão Mountain. Explore the town to see a side of life untouched by tourism, and stop by the church to admire views over the valley below. It's then on to Paderne Castle – an ancient fortress where Christian armies and Moorish forces crossed swords for centuries.
In Fonte de Alte, you can take a dip in the natural springs, or snoop around the surrounding village where there's free time for lunch. Pico Alto viewpoint and Queda do Vigario waterfall are also on the agenda, before visiting Quinto do Freixo country estate to taste medronho – also known as Portuguese fire water.

The east is one of the jewels in the Algarve's crown, and this full day excursion offers a flavour of its local culture as well as a chance to get to know its biggest city. You'll visit Faro, Olhao, and Tavira and travel through beautiful countryside in the Ria Formosa National Park. Sofia, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘This excursion is special because it brings the local culture to life. You'll see a performance of Fado music which is the heart of Portuguese tradition, a soulful singer fronts a group of musicians and together they convey passion, struggle, and longing. It's a hugely significant part of Portuguese culture.'We'll begin in Faro, the regional capital, where you'll have free time to explore the old town – the cathedral is a must-see. Next up is Olhao, a village on the banks of the Ria Formosa. You'll visit its famous fish market and then enjoy free time for lunch and shopping. Seville Cultural Tour with Local Guide from the Algarve
