What to expect

Castle Howard is one of Britain’s finest and most iconic stately homes, situated just outside York in the Howardian Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

The House, with its beautiful, recognisable exterior, was built over 300 years ago, and today it remains home to the Carlisle branch of the Howard family. Step inside and admire the awe-inspiring architecture and interiors with something to capture everyone’s imagination, including the spectacular Great Hall which rises 70 feet into the air.

The gardens and grounds at Castle Howard are monumental, and include lakes, follies, woodland, temples, and statues - all of which bring out the colour and drama of the four seasons. Meander through the snaking paths in ornamental woodland Ray Wood, from May to June see a stunning array of rhododendrons in bloom, stroll into the 18th century Walled Garden, perfumed with scents of roses in July and August, and enjoy sweeping scenery of countryside views and grand lakes.

Children will love Skelf Island, Castle Howard’s award-winning adventure playground set on an island, with rope bridges, slides, nets and climbing equipment to play on.

Enjoy delicious seasonal menus in the cafes, and Yorkshire gifts and treats in in the shops!
