What to expect
They call Nessebar the ‘Pearl of the Black Sea' for a reason – it's a treasure chest of cultural heritage without parallel on Bulgaria's coast. Penka, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Buildings and monuments dating back to the 5th century are still in use today in Nessebar, making it a living museum. With such a strategic location, Nessebar has always been a hub for commerce, and over 2,500 years ago, money was invented here and first used for trade.'
After pick-up in Obzor, you'll head to Nessebar and begin with a guided walking tour of the old town, which is crammed into a narrow peninsula jutting out into the Black Sea. As you wander through alleys fringed by overhanging wooden homes, you'll stumble upon ancient Byzantine churches or ruins from classical antiquity. Such is the wealth of history on this narrow peninsula that it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There's evidence in Nessebar that reflects the architectural progress of the whole Balkan and East Mediterranean regions.
Your guide will explain the history and culture of the town, where some monuments date back to the 5th century, and accompany your visit to the richly decorated interior of St Stephen's Church. Once you've admired its frescos, if you've picked the lunch included option, you'll head to a restaurant for a three-course feast. In the afternoon, there's free time to explore on your own.

This tour is a great way to get to know the best of Bulgarian culture and heritage. With a visit to ancient Byala, a riverboat trip and an afternoon of folklore and fun with the grannies of Solnik village, you'll experience a lot during your day out. Ivan, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Solnik is a typical mountain village, but Granny Radka's house is anything but typical – it's like a mini-museum. She has displays of traditional costumes and textiles all over the walls, most of which were made by Granny Radka herself.'Kick off in the seaside town of Byala, on Cape St Atanas. Discover its rich history dating back to the Byzantine era as you walk through the area. You'll see ancient pottery making equipment, a partially restored winery and the basilica. Soaking up the expansive sea view from the top of the cliffs is all part of the Byala experience. Next, we will head to Kamchiya for a 25-minute boat trip along the river to enjoy the beauty of the Bulgarian countryside.Your final stop will be at the quaint village of Solnik, where we'll visit Granny Radka's house. You'll be invited to take a look at the display of typical clothes, try some local rose liqueur and tuck into a tasty lunch of dishes from the region, freshly prepared with locally sourced ingredients. Then you'll be immersed in Bulgarian folklore when you watch a song and dance performance by the village elders dressed in the traditional costume.

Departing from Obzor, you'll transfer to Nessebar from where the ferry whisks you to explore ancient Sozopol. After an hour's cruise on the high-speed passenger catamaran Seacat One you'll be docking in Sozopol.
