Do this because

  • Enjoy a scenic drive through lush countryside with opportunity for photo stops
  • Explore the incredible Lady Knox geyser eruption with heights of 10 to 20 meters
  • Walk through a surreal, lunar-like environment to witness the volcanic wonders
  • Witness the frightening display of geothermal chemistry, the Devil’s Bath, a neon green natural wonder
  • Explore the scenic beauty of Lake Taupō by stretching your legs along the lakeside

What to expect

Experience a land where myth and legend come to life, where the earth boils, mud heals, and steam disappears into the clouds above with the town of Taupō that sits at the edge of Australasia's largest lake, and the activities available in the area are as diverse as the landscape itself. A short drive, approximately 20 minutes south of Rotorua, will bring you to the park, which is considered to be one of New Zealand's most diverse geothermal attractions. Discover an area that has been sculptured by geothermal activity over thousands of years, and see unique volcanic features, geysers, and more!

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is New Zealand’s most colorful and diverse geothermal area. Thousands of years in the making, this stunning landscape is nestled within a natural bush setting, through which self-guided walks take between 30 and 75 minutes. The range of geothermal activity is extensive and includes huge volcanic craters formed by collapsing ground, steaming vents, sinter terrace formations, colored hot and cold water springs, among which is the world-famous Champagne Pool.

Experience a land of fire and ice, Lake Taupō, a stunning natural cauldron, ringed by beautiful snow-capped mountains, and feel the thrill of cascading waterfalls at Huka falls. Be prepared to have your taste buds tingling, with the chance to try an array of exotic artisan honeys in a special tasting room.
